Protest to The West Virginia Public Service Commission

There are two ways to make  your views known to the WV Public Service Commission (WVPSC).  You can be an intervenor or a protestant.

Intervenors request to appear before the commission, present testimony, examine witnesses, and the like.  You do not have to be a lawyer to be an intervenor.  The deadline to request this status is April 30, 2007.  There are expenses involved in being an intervener.  At the least, any communication an intervener makes with the commission or another intervener must be copied to all other intervenors.  Click here to see the Laurel Run Community Watershed Association's application to intervene in this case.

Protestants are those who send protest letters to the commission.  Letters may be sent at any time.  Click here to see several protest letters.  Commission staff reviews the letters, sorts them into categories such as ecological issues, health issues, etc. and presents them for the commissioners consideration.  THEY DO HAVE IMPACT.

Communication by intervenors or protestants must be sent to the commission via mail of some form.  Email is not acceptable.  Communication may be hand written or typed and it should reference case number 07-0508-E-CN

Sample Protest Letter

You may have other reasons for protesting the power line, such as increased possibility of illegal access by hunters, ATV riders, or other trespassers because Allegheny does not fence its rights of way.  Whatever your reason, say what you feel.  There are no grades for grammer or style - only your reasons count.

Dear Executive Secretary Squire:

Regarding case number 07-0508-E-CN, I protest Allegheny Energy's Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line.  The line would run through my property.  I fear it would reduce the value of my property because possible buyers do not want to live near a power line that is ugly, cracks and pops, and may be found to cause cancer.

Thank you
